Part 2: Healthy Conception, Pregnancy & Babyhood

Now we move on to Part 2 of the previous post on How to Have a Healthy Conception, Pregnancy and the First 6 Months of Babyhood. Topics in this blog post are The Birthing Process and Vaccines.

The Birthing Process

A book on Waldorf Education and Child Development
In the Waldorf Schools, they tell the "Rainbow Bridge Birth Story" on the birthday of your child. See a personalized version for my son below:

Once upon a time there was a little child named Santiago who was still with the angles in heaven and he was very happy there. He looked at the beautiful colors and listened to the lovely music, and that was where he belonged. But one day the clouds parted in heaven and Santiago saw the beautiful green earth below with all the people happily playing and working and he suddenly longed to go there and see what it was like. He saw all the rainbow colors of the earth, He saw butterflies visiting flowers and birds flying in the air. They seemed to be beckoning him. He saw fish swimming in the sea and all the different plants that covered the earth. he saw children climbing trees running and jumping in the meadows and walking through sand and leaves. It was all so beautiful! So he said to his angel, ‘Please, may I go down to earth now?” But his angel looked at him and said, “No, it is too soon. You must wait a little while yet”. So the child went and was happy and soon forgot about the earth. Then one day again he saw a glimpse of the earth through the clouds again. He saw mother and fathers doing their work. He saw bakers and engineers and writers and farmers. He saw mothers and fathers loving their children. Then he saw a beautiful mother with love and longing in her heart for a child and he asked his angel now, “May I go to her?” The angel said, “You must go through the land of dreams first.” The next night the little child had a dream. He dreamed that he met and man and a woman and they stretched out their arms to him and asked him to come be their child. The child told his angel the dream. The angel said, “It is now time for you to go.” So the child asked, “So may I go now?” “You shall see.” Said the angel. That night the child went to sleep into dreamland and while ten moons waxed and waned he rocked in a little boat. And at the end of that time a beautiful rainbow bridge stretched from heaven to earth and on it came the child as a tiny baby and slid into his mother and father’s waiting arms. They looked in awe at this new life and said “We shall call him Santiago.
Now, isn't that just magical and beautiful? When I first read and heard that story, it brought tears to my eyes mainly because of how TRUTHFUL it is! Children are divine beings and parents should remember that. It is said that it is them who choose us, not the other way around. We will become parents when we are chosen. So, it is just proper that we be ready when the time comes. Preparation is essential and that is why it is good for couples to educate themselves on mindful parenting. It is also a gift that pregnancy takes 9 months (or more) so that we can really take time to transition, just like they are transitioning from heavenly beings into our world. We must remember that.

"You must negotiate with your doctor or midwife"
-Jake Tan on preparing & fighting for your birth plan

Jake Tan is a believer in gentle births. He says that many of our children's illnesses may be traced to birth traumas. And of course, our earliest impressions of life are critical.
During gestation, birth and early childhood, the limbic system registers all of our sensations and feelings, without translating it into the language of cortex, simply because it's not developed yet. That memory lives in the body through out the rest of our life whether we know of it or not. - Birth Into Being
Tan recommends delayed cord clamping (Yay!) because it will cut the essential distribution of baby's blood from the placenta. He read an article to us stating this fact which was written in 1969! My goodness! Why are many doctors still cutting the cords too early? Call it what it is - it is baby's blood not cord blood (in cord blood banking). Would you steal blood from your newborn child so that you can save stem cells for future illnesses he/she might not even have? Why are we feeding in to a fear based module of thinking?
What if, by cutting the cord too early, we created the exact conditions that stem cell research is trying to fix? And what if we just gave Mother Nature a chance, left the cord intact at least until it stops pulsating, and started gathering data on these newborns? As health care providers, “first do no harm” means little if we can’t acknowledge with humility that, yes, perhaps we got it wrong; we should be willing to learn from our mistakes and do our best to provide the next generation with what is its birthright: a cord full of rich blood. -Childbirth With Love
Have you read the story of my lotus birth here? (Where I did NOT cut the umbilical cord of my baby after birth and waited until it fell off naturally)

"Children are wanting to come into this world...to be cared for - not subject to stress"
-Jake Tan

Think about that statement. Are we subjecting our children to unnecesary stress? Tan says that children cannot develop in a stressful environment. We all might be nodding our heads to agree but do we really know if we are doing our children good by exposing them to electronic media, television, advertisements (even billboards on EDSA). It is unappropriate for their age to be xposed to such stress factors when they must see the world to be GOOD, BEAUTIFUL and TRUE. These are words from Rudolph Steiner, the founder of Anthroposophy and Waldorf Education.

-------------------------

Now this is the part where is gets controversial. Vaccinations.

Seven years ago I already had my doubts with pharmaceutical vaccinations. When I discussed my concerns with my husband, I wasn't prepared with research to back me up so we 'compromised' by giving my son some vaccinations which we spaced out in 4 months for the 3 separate jabs of the Dtap/IPV/HiB vaccine. The HepaB shot was administered at birth (I don't even remember giving the go signal for this) plus 2 more separate jabs within the next 8 months.

The Guardian writes an article on some of the side effects on these here. If only I could turn back time, I wouldn't have vaccinated my son.

Jake Tan supports my current view on vaccinations. It is unnecesary. Yes, you read right. Growing up, we've been told that vaccines saves lives so you might be shocked and even react violently on how seemingly selfish I am for choosing NOT to vaccinate my daughter but let me shed more light on the matter.

In Anthroposophic Medicine, it is believed that children will only use illnesses to release certain capacities. When your child gets a fever, it is encouraged to let the fever take its course so the body will learn how to manage and heal on its own. When we suppress this innate ability of our body to take charge, we are sabotaging the healing process. There is a beautiful article explaining these matters: Anthroposophy, Diseases and Vaccinations in one blog article here.

I was once a panic-stricken parent but slowly I have learned to trust in the inner body wisdom of my children AND personally take charge of their health, not leave it to the doctors and government. We as parents are responsible for keeping our children healthy. A healthy immune system depends primarily on lifestyle and diet. If your immune system is strong, you will not be vulnerable to viral outbreaks. It's really as simple as that.

"The most protected child (vaccinated) is the most sickly child"
-Jake Tan

"The recent epidemics are from fully vaccinated children"
-Jake Tan

Contrary to popular belief, the recent 2014 measles outbreak in NYC was from a vaccinated woman! Read about it on Science Mag here. Why should I even bother to vaccinate when fully vaccinated children don't get immunity after all?

Have you read up on the active ingredients of vaccines? MSG, Formaldehyde, Monkey Kidney Tissue, Calf Serum are just some of the ingredients found in vaccines. Read the complete listing of ingredients from VaxTruth.Org here.

What about polio?
The children are being vaccinated for measles and polio, in spite of the fact that measles rates are very low and declining in the Philippines, and that there has not been a single case of polio in the Philippines since 1993. - Health Impact News
There is an interesting chart comparing vaccinated and unvaccinated children in Dr. Mercola's website here. Knowing that my child will be more susceptible to allergies, asthma, ADHD and Autism if given vaccines...again, why would I allow this?

Here's a very timely health documentary that will help open our eyes further.

The hidden story about vaccines, drugs and food… Three huge topics in one film. Why put all this in one movie? Because these issues are directly related, and we have an opportunity to harness the millions of us engaged in each of them to overcome the noise put out by the medical-industrial conglomerate. You peel back the layers and see what’s really driving our industrialized food, our vaccine expansion, and our dependence on pharmaceuticals – it’s the same culprit. Huge corporations funded by individual misery, one broken life at a time. These three story lines converge on Wall Street, but this story takes us beyond the problem to the inspiring and empowering role mothers are now taking in uniting to protect their families.

I have interviewed several people on their thoughts and feelings about vaccinations and will share in a separate blog post soon.

This is my blog stating my personal opinions on the matter. If you believe otherwise for you and your children, I respect that. Let's continue to live in peace next to each other :)

Delicielo Moringa Cupcake

Just before Maya was born, I contacted an architect, Cielo Castro to design me a study for my future Green Home. A true artist of the hands, she recently discovered that she can also bake goodies! She sent me samples of her vegan treats as a post-birthday gift which I thought was real sweet (pun intended!)

The photo below shows the Pumpkin Cinnamon Cupcake (left) which is a new flavor she offers. I thought it tasted like Christmas and will make you feel festive paired with hot tea or tsokolate. This is something you can order for parties this season! Because I am a green mom, my favorite was the Malunggay Cupcake with Dark Belgian Frosting & Chocolate Chips (right).

The sweetness of the frosting balances the slightly bitter moringa cake. How fun is it to eat something unabashedly green! I ate two pieces in one sitting with Rooibos tea. I can still taste it in my mouth and I know it will haunt me when I want something sweet but healthy to munch on!

I am a fan of Moringa because of all the health properties. Also called the miracle plant, every backyard of a traditional Filipino home has one or more growing for daily food intake. When I visited Indonesia for the first time and did an Herbal Walk tour, I found out that they grow it in every family compound, too. I am glad more home bakers are starting to include this ingredient especially for breastfeeding mothers because it promotes healthy lactation.

"Scientific research confirms that these humble leaves are a powerhouse of nutritional value. Gram for gram, moringa leaves contain: SEVEN times the vitamin C in oranges, FOUR times the Calcium in milk, FOUR times the vitamin A in carrots, TWO times the protein in milk and THREE times the Potassium in bananas." - www.EdLagman.com

Delicielo Vegan Treats has no eggs, no dairy and no refined sugar!

Menu and prices below: (The Malunggay & Pumpkin Cinnamon cupcakes are not here yet because they are new flavors but pricing is the same)

Part 1: Healthy Conception, Pregnancy and the First Six Months of Babyhood

A few weeks ago, I was invited by Kolisko Waldorf School to a talk on How to Keep Healthy at Conception, Pregnancy & The First Six Months of Babyhood. I am using this portal to share my notes, some research and thoughts taken from this interesting topic conducted by Jake Tan, a pioneer in Anthroposophic Medicine in the Philippines.

Sign up sheet. What a lovely welcome with the handmade Waldorf doll :)
I resonate with these as I am genuinely a Virgo; deeply concerned about health and wellness. My journey into the green lifestyle jumpstarted when I become a mom to my first bon, Santi. When you are responsible for the whole being of another, you are suddenly more critical of what goes onto their skin and into their bellies. (And that's just the physical layer, there's the emotional and pychological aspect, too!)

Jake Tan waiting for guests to settle before speaking. This is the Kindergarten classroom.

After the very beautiful introduction by Tita Juna, one of the Kindergarten teachers at Kolisko, Jake started talking about "Environmental Medicine & Environmental Toxins" and how it affects babies in utero. He asked us to simply research on these topics in Google. He mentioned a startling fact, 'We have about 80,000 (man-made!) chemicals released in the environment after World War II". Yoiks!
"Today’s children face hazards that were neither known nor imagined a few decades ago. Children are at risk of exposure to thousands of new synthetic chemicals. Since World War II, more than 80,000 new chemicals have been invented. Many of these chemicals have been dispersed widely into the environment. Some will persist in the environment for decades and even centuries. Most of these chemicals did not previously exist in nature. Nearly 3,000 chemicals are high-production-volume (HPV) chemicals. They are produced each year in quantities of greater than one million pounds. HPV chemicals are used extensively in our homes, schools, and communities. They are widely dispersed in air, water, soil, and waste sites. Over 4 billion pounds of toxic chemicals are released by industry into the nation's environment each year, including 72 million pounds of recognized carcinogens.Of the top 20 chemicals discharged to the environment, nearly 75% are known or suspected to be toxic to the developing human brain." -Children & Environmental Toxins, Mount Sinai

Environmetal Toxins and Pollutants come in all forms, says Tan. Parents and those wanting to conceive should be cautious of radiation, pesticides, antibiotics & growth hormones in food, paints, resin, foams, etc.

Let me elaborate on each a little further with some research notes I made.

Hazards of Radiation
Ugh, it's everywhere these days! Wireless technology, X-rays, ultrasounds, microwaves, nuclear plants are some of the man-made sources of radiation.
"When radiation collides with molecules in living cells it can damage them. If the DNA in the nucleus of a cell is damaged, the cell may become cancerous. The cell then goes out of control, divides rapidly and causes serious health problems." - BBC
Got insomnia? Read up on the dangers of Wifi here. It might be linked to your mobile phone-internet connectivity at home.

Pesticides: Glyphosate in our food, soil and water - and why it matters.
Glyphosate, the key ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup, is the most heavily used herbicide on GMO crops. In 2007, the last year for which we have reliable statistics, U.S. farmers used 88,000 tons of glyphosate. Allowing for no increases, that amounts to 580,000 tons of glyphosate dumped onto our food and into our soil and water in the past six years alone....And that’s just in the U.S. - Organic Consumers Org
This article writes about the increase on agricultural pesticides in the past 50 years and increased incidences of neurobiological disorders (ADHD) in children in the past 40 years. Coincidence? Obviously not! We are what we eat, and if we eat junk...what do you think we become?

More Chemicals, Hormones & Antibiotics in the food we eat!
If you are still unaware of how the food industry works, I highly recommend you read these books that will enlighten you and most likely change the way you eat.

Children, pregnant women and developing embryos are the most affected by the chemicals, hormones and antibiotics in the food we ingest. (chemical-laden fruits and vegetables and all meat and dairy products)

Paints, Formaldehydes, Resin & Foams in our Homes
Be wary of furnitures and home items that emit indoor pollutants. It only occurred to me a few months ago that even our mattresses that we sleep on can be a major factor on your general well-being; baby mattresses info right here!)

"The Green Guide recommends not purchasing mattresses treated with the fire-retardant polybrominated diphenyl ethers -- which accumulate in the human body, and can potentially harm fetuses and infants in particular. It suggests buying beds with hardwood foundations, not plywood or particleboard, and an untreated, organic cotton or wool mattress with a natural latex core." -Creating a Toxin-Free Home
An  EPA study proves that indoor air contains up to 100 times more contaminants than the outdoor. Read Mercola's article on why we should never take clean air for granted here.

Ok, NOW WHAT?
Is the paranoia kicking in? Knowing all these alarming facts, what can we do about it? Below is my personal suggestions of what we can do as parents to protect our families (and increase our health & immune system)

Jake Tan passed this info sheet around
  1. Minimize exposure to environmental toxins. Read up on how to create a toxic-free home
  2. Eat organic, local and in season. There is wisdom in following the cycles of nature. Note the word 'nature' which means to eat foods in their natural state for best absorption of mutrients and minerals. Jake Tan recommends a total organic food diet with less animal flesh, more fruits and vegetables to his patients that have difficulty conceiving. If you must eat meat, support local organic or pasture farms that do not inject growth hormones or feed antibiotics to their animals. Backyard Farms carry pasture-raised, hormone-free antibiotic-free chickens. Honestly, it is the only chicken I feed my family :)
  3. Log out, unplug electronic devices and sleep early! We need sleep and rest because this is the only time our body can detoxify. Why rob ourselves from this natural healing state? I overheard this from a cousin, "Once you get a job requiring a graveyard shift (in call centers), you land one foot into the grave".
"Many health hazards have come into light for those working overnight. Scientists feel that working the graveyard shift interrupts our body’s circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is almost like a biological clock on a 24 hour cycle that deals with our physiological processes. This also includes telling our body when its time to sleep and when it’s time to be awake. Having a balance to this is very important because when we are not following that schedule, we become very weak from lack of sleep and becoming weak makes us more vulnerable to diseases." - Sleeping Habits
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, they follow an organ clock noting when your organs detoxify. If you want your liver to do its duty of cleaning out your blood, you MUST be in deep sleep by 1:00am, meaning you are in bed by 10pm. Which reminds me, it's time for me to rest so my organs can do its work!

Gentle Birth Forum with Ibu Robin Lim

When I was 3 months pregnant with Maya, divine intervention happened. I was in Baguio for a family vacation the same time Ibu Robin Lim spoke about midwifery, homebirth and lotus birth. Back then, I didn't even know who she was. Alas, the universe must have heard my prayers and the angels paved the way for me to meet such a gentle soul. That night sealed my decision to have a homebirth AND a lotus birth, too! These get togethers (talks, seminars, forums) with like-minded souls really give me the strength to stay in the 'road less traveled'!

Today was a special day for all the birth-keepers in Manila because 2011 CNN Hero of the Year awardee Ibu Robin Lim finally got to meet the group behind Gentle Birth in the Philippines as we tackled 'Gentle Birth' in a public forum.

A guest speaker before Ibu, Dr. Faye Cagayan, an OB-GYN at Philippine General Hospital taught a few SAYUNTIS (Sayaw Buntis) exercises and presented this slide. YES, YES, YES! My wish is for all doctors and nurses to respect a laboring mothers mobility to increase her chances for a natural childbirth!

Were you free to move as you wished when you gave birth?

Ibu centering before her talk with healer Olivier, husband of my friend Jhoanna. They did a peaceful waterbirth in Bali, Indonesia with their son, Tala :)

Ibu Robin sure knows how to make a grand entrance! If you've seen her videos on Youtube, you'll know that this is her usual re-enactment of what a natural birth and lotus birth is. Humor breaks the ice :)

Ibu Robin refers to the placenta, cord and baby trio as the Holy Trinity. This is the root, stem & fruit. Lotus Birth is leaving the cord intact until the placenta is born but waiting until the cord to fall off naturally on it's own is considered a full lotus birth. (Read about my full lotus birth here.)

After presenting powerful images of her humanitarian work in Bumi Wadah Foundation (Ibu Robin immediately sought action after typhoon Haiyan struck Leyte), she made us hold hands to unite energies for gentle births by starting with ourselves.

Here I am with my birth mentor, Ibu Robin and my back up doctor Dr. Menefrida Reyes who was very supportive of my VBAC (she even spoke about it today!). My midwife, Deborah Gustafson should be in this photo but she couldn't make it.

My awesome doula, Irina Otmakhova!!! If you want love and support before, during and after your birth, you MUST get in touch her! Here is her website for her services - www.consciousbirthmanila.com

I am so glad to be able to refer Irina (& Deborah!) to my little yogini friend, Aisa who is expecting baby W in a few weeks time! Blessings to your family, W's!!!

And here is another mother making a conscious birth-plan by reading up and attending today's event. Thank you for coming, Timi!

Cheers to the organizing team for the Gentle Birth Forum, Bravo to all of you, ladies! Awesome work! Thank you, Pat for the photo.

Closing with a message from fellow birth-keeper, Cheryl Chan-Wong:

Hello fellow Gentle Birth Protectors,
For those you missed out Gentle Birth Philippine’s Open Forum with Ibu Robin Lim, you have another chance to see her and this time is by tune in to UNTV's Rise N Shine tomorrow morning, around 830am. Ibu Robin Lim will be on air to discuss the Gentle Birth and everything you need to know about “taking back” one’s birthing rights.

How I Manifested A Successful Home Waterbirth: My Spiritual & Physical Preparations

Birthing is a spiritual and life changing journey. When you embark on one, you must do your prep work beforehand. And luckily pregnancy lasts 9 months which gives you enough time to do what it is you need to do. Here is my pre-production work which granted me the birth I have always wanted, the birth of my dreams <3

Spiritual Preps: 99 percent reality

I’ve been a student of Kabbalah for 2 years now. Kabbalah is spiritual technology. You can be a Christian, Muslim or a Yogi like me and practice Kabbalah tools to improve the quality of your life and bring light into our world. What I am drawn to is that Kabbalah uses explanations from Quantum Physics to make my rational mind comprehend spiritual concepts in an earthly manner. I particularly like the blog articles of Kabbalah student and mentor, Billy Phillips here.

Some of the Kabbalah students and mentors I study with

One of the teachings is that the world we know and perceive is only 1% of total reality. The remaining 99% reality is beyond our five senses. This means that in order for us to manifest something in our 1% world, we must work primarily in the 99% realm because that is where energy comes from. This is how all energies flow into the universe. Yes, it confirms all that we have known since childhood. Everything is from God or the Light.

After finding out I was pregnant, I was determined to have a natural birth because I was traumatized with the c-section I had years ago (I’m pretty sure my son was too). I started doing my spiritual work as taught to me by my Kabbalah mentor. Here are some of the many things I did:

  • I kept mum about my pregnancy for 3 months, (ideally) keeping the pregnancy a secret between me and my husband only. I know that we tried keeping it a secret for as long as we could but Montri wanted to share the news with our family. It is said that the first trimester is very critical because the energy of the growing baby within you is so sensitive. It’s common for people to announce to the whole world once they find out they’re pregnant. What they do not know is that, other people’s consciousness may affect their baby in utero. We are all made up of energy, after all. Energy can pass through flesh and bones. So yes, negative or upsetting or jealous thoughts can affect what’s inside of you. My mentor once said, “Many miscarriages can be saved if they followed this practice”. And it’s an old tradition too. Many lolas follow this. They keep their early pregnancy a secret to protect their unborn child.
  • As advised, I scheduled for a reading with Ruthie, the official astrologer of the Kabbalah community. I was in my first trimester then. Ruthie is gifted to see beyond our physical world. She told me about my past lives and despite us just having a chat over Skype, without any real introductions, she very personal knew things about me and my family. She knew that I was pregnant and that I had a son already. She knew about my parents and siblings. She told me that the birth of my baby will be a “healing birth”. And that I should work on forgiveness because I still had resentments from the past which kept myself ‘closed’ when I want to be ‘open’ for the birth.
  • Sometime in my 3rd-4th month of pregnancy, I attended Rosh Hashanah in LA with my Kabbalah community in Manila. Rosh Hashanah is considered a ‘new year’ holiday for the Kabbalists because this is the time we plant seeds of consciousness to be reaped throughout the rest of the year. During the event, I was given the opportunity to meet Karen Berg, the current head of the international community. She gave my baby a blessing saying “your baby will be healthy and strong”. Since then, I had certainty that my pregnancy and birth will be well.
  • Wearing the Red String is another practice of Kabbalists to protect us from 'evil eye' or negative energies brought about from people who stare and feel emotions that are not healthy for you or baby in utero.
  • Another tool that we practice in Kabbalah is a cleansing tool called Mikveh. It’s submerging your whole body in water while scanning and meditating on texts like the 72 Names of God. They say that it pierces through your klipot or negative shells and washes you anew. It is good for pregnant women to do this daily. My mentor would always ask me each time I would meet her over Skype, “When was the last time you did Mikveh?” So I did mikveh weekly or monthly depending on my schedule. Although daily is ideal especially in the last month of pregnancy. It is written that this ensures a safe and fast labor and birth.
  • My friend's pool in L.A, one of the places I did mikveh in during my pregnancy
Signs or Premonitions

  • Looking back, my birth was so surreal. I had dreamt about this event many many times during my pregnancy. Prophetic dreams they surely were! The first of which was that my natural birth was successful, fast & painless. That I had caught my own baby. Then another dream about feeling the crowning of baby’s head during birth. And in another dream, I had birthed with my waters fully intact, an auspicious sign. And true enough, during my actual birth, my water membranes only burst when she emerged. Irina (my doula) and Montri (my husband) both saw it happening.
They depicted it so beautifully…

”As her head came out, the waters turned pink and then a blue-ish membrane also burst to the sides as the body slid gracefully out”, Montri recalls.

I remember I kept watching in the waters, but due to the dim lights and already red coloring I could not see much for several minutes.....Until I saw it! The little head was emerging slowly into the outer world now filled with water and motherly juices. Her membranes were gently flipping on both side announcing the arrival of the new soul into the world. And seconds later her entirely body slipped into the microcosms confined to the intimacy of the birthing pool”, Irina writes in her email dedication to Maya.

  • Not only was I dreaming of my birth, my friends and relatives were also dreaming of my birth! Kaye dreamt that I had birthed successfully with my baby in arms. Noelle dreamt about birthing twice; that moment of crowning at birth and another successful one (although in one of her dreams, she dreamt that she was the one birthing). Jeri dreamt of the gender of my child, that baby would be a girl version of my son Santi. My cousin from the US dreamt that I gave birth so she checked on me through Facebook but that was days prior to the birth.
When I think about these dreams and how it relates to the what happened, I can’t help but confirm my personal (and Kabbalistic) beliefs that time and space are illusions. Did this incident already occur (as my dreams had shown?) Then time does bend for us to experience. If you’ve seen the movie, “What The Bleep Do We Know” then you’ll get my drift.

  • Like my friend Daniw, I was constantly seeing these numbers on the clock 1:11, 11:11. I read online that these numbers are signs that angels are communicating with you. I’d like to believe that I was given good graces early on by these celestial beings.
  • Yes, that bird showing up on our roof pecking for food and hanging out as if waiting for dear little Maya to come out during my labor was a good omen. It is said that… “pigeons are determined creatures. They stay in an area as long as there is food despite attempts of humans and other birds to chase them away. A pigeon sighting can encourage you to be stubborn and hang in there, regardless of what challenges are thrown in your path.” Perfect message, although I didn’t know it then. But yeah, that’s exactly what happened. I stayed resilient and didn’t allow doubts to creep in my head. That’s how you become successful at any goal, “Just keep swimming”, says the fish in Finding Nemo, right?
They say that when you are pregnant there is a thin veil between the spiritual and physical world because we are carrying an extra soul within us which makes our instincts stronger. Did you have any dreams or premonitions during your pregnancy? Aren’t preggies known to win the lottery? Hehe

Physical Preps: 1 percent reality

99 percent still doesn’t add up to 100 percent without the 1 percent so I also did my 1 percent preparations in the physical plane which is the world we live and perceive in.

The very first major preparation was to move houses. Since I wanted to birth at home, I had to leave Quezon City because my midwives informed me of the ordinance banning home births. My husband and I decided to move to San Juan, back to the compound where I grew up. Here it is (still and hopefully forever will be) legal to have the right to choose where to birth. Good thing that we planned it early enough that construction finished a few weeks before I was due.

My closest friends know that I’m BIG on research. I am a voracious reader of books and online sources when I get into a topic. Born in September, Virgos are super critical and I’ve found a good avenue to be very detailed. When I found out I was pregnant, I sought out books that would support my VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section) decision. I wanted to read all the positive birthing stories so my mind can process these instead of fears.

These are the titles I read throughout my pregnancy.

  • Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin
  • Silent Knife: Ceasarian Prevention and Vaginal Birth After Cesarean by Cohen & Estner
  • The VBAC Companion: The Expectant Mother’s Guide to Vaginal Birth After Cesearean by Diana Korte
  • Active Birth by Janet Balaskas
  • Cut, Stapled and Mended by Rosanna Rosewood
  • Bountiful, Beautiful, Blissful: Experience the Natural Power of Pregnancy & birth with Kundalini Yoga and Meditation by Gurmukh
  • Hypnobirthing: The Mongan Method: A Natural approach to an easier, more comfortable birthing by Marie Mongan
Thanks to Jenny Medina, Jenny Ong, Denise Bernardo and Irina Otmakhova for lending me these books. Knowledge is power!

I also watched videos: The Business of Being Born (an awakening documentary!), Microbirth (an ongoing project that tackles birth in a scientific manner- it will want you to pursue the most natural birth!), Orgasmic Birth videos on Youtube and Daniw’s unassisted waterbirth video was so peaceful and inspiring! Perhaps I was in such awe of her birth process that my mind manifested the same scenario with my birth as well!

Food & Drinks: I drank Organic Red Raspberry Tea Leaf from Healthy Options all throughout my pregnancy. I read that this strengthens the uterus muscles and would keep my waters intact. The reason why I rushed to the hospital 7 years ago was because my waters broke early on even before any contractions started. The thing about this happening is that hospitals put you on a timeline once your waters break – they want your baby out of you in the next 12-24 hours. If there is no sign of progress, medical interventions start. I’m so happy that my waters stayed intact even if my labor went beyond 24 hours.

Moringana malunggay infused teas were also a staple during my pregnancy. Even now post partum I take this. These are available at 75php per box at flowsurfyogasamba@gmail.com

I ate Organic Medjool Dates throughout my pregnancy. Thanks to my thoughtful and generous friends from Dubai and Singapore for sending me packages of dates. There has been research to prove that eating dates all throughout the last month of pregnancy shortens time of labor and increases dilation for delivery. Apparently, this ancient wisdom is also written in the Quran. If you can, please buy organic medjool dates. Medjool dates don’t spike blood sugar which is good to know if you’re diabetic. Someone once told me that you can purchase dates from Santi’s deli. Might be good to check it out!

The Blessingway: I knew that intentions are powerful so I had asked some of my FO (far out) friends (those that actually supported my birth choices) to organize a blessingway where they had wished me and baby well with good intentions for the upcoming birth. I feel this helped me tremendously because there is power in numbers. I was not alone in this feat, people who loved me were also with me in this journey. And that made the difference.

My Blessingway spread prepared by loving friends
Just a few days before the homebirth, I started wearing a Baltic Amber necklace from www.cutieverse.com. Baltic Amber has been used as a teething necklace to relieve pain. This site says it stimulates the thyroid glands for many health and healing benefits. It might have been useful, too!

And of course, I can’t deny the fact that Yoga has helped me stay active throughout my pregnancy, specifically Yin Yoga and Pre-Natal Yoga. I only stopped teaching Yoga a month before my due date (because I had to attend to moving houses). I keep telling people that all the yoga poses I teach during Pre-Natal Yoga are actually birthing poses. I did all of them during my labor to ease my baby down the canal. I remember one teacher telling me that when you are pregnant, you should practice Yin Yoga to soften and open the body. You cannot let your baby out if you are stiff in the muscles. After birth, you can focus on other yang styles of yoga to strengthen your body.

What spiritual and/or physical preparations did you do for the births of your children? Please do share! I’d love to hear them.

Posting my awesome birthing playlist in the next entry! Oh you know, music makes a whole lotta difference when you’re birthing a baby out of you ;)

Sarah Maya's Lotus Birth

Minutes after her birth, my midwives, Deborah and Lornie finally arrived congratulating us for the unassisted birth. Apparently, if no midwives or doctors were present at the time of birth, it is considered unassisted. Yay! This was totally unplanned but isn't LIFE in general?

They checked on me and the baby and then we waited for the placenta to come out. After 20-30 minutes waiting in the birthing pool I suggested that gravity might help placenta out so I transferred to the birthing stool they brought with them. We waited some more then eventually I pushed my placenta out.

Unlike hospital procedure, there was no clamping or cutting of the umbilical cord. 2011 CNN hero of the year, Fil-Am midwife, director of Bumi Sehat Yayasan Birthing Homes in Bali and author, Ibu Robin Lim advocates against this. “When you clamp and cut umbilical cord right away, you lose one third of the baby’s blood supply”, she said in her book launch in Mt Cloud, Baguio.  I was glad to attend this and have met during my first trimester of pregnancy. She opened my eyes to what a gentle birth is. And I wanted exactly that for Maya.

I was doing a full lotus birth, the practice of non-severance of the placenta from my baby. We chose to wait until it naturally falls off.  Obviously, there are physical, emotional and spiritual benefits to this practice for both baby and I.

So, my doula, Irina brought a bowl of water where placenta was washed right next to baby. Deborah asked me if I wanted to try having some raw to eat and I agreed. She cut off a small piece which she blended into a banana yogurt smoothie for me to drink. I gulped it down at once, afraid of any foul tastes but there was none.

Most mammals eat their placenta raw after birth and regain their strength. Traditional Chinese have been using placenta for its medicinal value for thousands of years.  Some choose to preserve the placenta by drying and made into pills. This is called placenta encapsulation (which is what I eventually did using a dehydrator). Many doulas and midwives abroad do this as part of their service.

Irina proceeded to place some salt on placenta (I noticed that my baby cried a bit as she massaged salt onto placenta so maybe it was too harsh to do so at that point?) and poured drops of Lavender pure essential oil afterwards. Later on I added dried rosemary. I continued to add salt, Lavender and rosemary everyday on each side of the placenta.

At first I used an adult diaper to contain the placenta to absorb the excess blood but my sister in law pointed out that the lining of the diaper has chemicals so I moved it into a cotton blanket and placed it inside an open basket to help the air dry process. I also changed the cotton blanket daily.

Having the placenta attached to the baby is very tricky. We managed slowly. Everytime I breastfed, I had to skilfully move baby and placenta in basket to one side. The good side is I had lots of skin to skin time with baby since I couldn’t clothe her fully because of her umbilical cord. I read that other couples found a way to swaddle baby with placenta attached but I didn’t get to learn this. Another advantage is that people don’t normally want to see the placenta (which really looks like a huge chunk of meat) so that also kept visitors from coming too soon. This lessens my worries for germ-phobic Virgos like me.

Three days after Maya’s birth, just after having dinner with my family, she was crying inconsolably. I carried her, attempted to breastfeed, and tried burping. Maya was almost hysterical. Then one legged kicked off the almost completely dried out umbilical cord and she suddenly stopped crying. One helper barged in saying that she moved her wet clothes hanging outside indoors. She went on saying that babies usually cry when their clothes were left to dry outdoors when night falls.

I’ll never know if her version of why Maya was crying is true or perhaps she cried because she was saying her final goodbye to her companion in my belly for 41 weeks, her placenta. Maybe it’s a combination of both. We’ll never really know. But I like how the story of Maya’s lotus birth ends. It’s all a mystery.

To learn more about how to do a lotus birth, I highly recommend you read the book by Ibu Robin Lim, Placenta: The Forgotten Chakra.

A Healing Birth

A VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section) home waterbirth and lotus birth

The night of March 12, just a day after my husband, Montri’s birthday, I started having cramping sensations very similar to PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome). They were surely contractions but were still far apart with no real pattern. In the previous days, I also saw a series of ‘bloody show’ (blood tinged mucus from the softening of the cervix) in the toilet. I felt that the arrival of our new baby was near… I just needed to wait it out. We used a contraction timer app which I downloaded in both my ipad and iphone. When I found it too much of a hassle to be right next to my gadgets after each contraction, I just manually took note of the intervals with pen and paper. The last book on birthing I read was Hypnobirthing

I used the breathing techniques during surges/contractions to keep me present and calm. Then I started self-administering remedies from the birthing homeopathy kit and scanned some prayers from the Zohar specifically for labor and birth.

Homeopathic Remedies I used during labor
I sent a text message to both my midwife, Deborah and my doula, Irina at 3:21 am that contractions were already 6-8 minutes apart and that I could no longer sleep. I knew that Deborah was going to come when I could no longer talk in between contractions (which wasn’t my case because I could still concentrate and speak in between them) but since she would be coming all the way from Antipolo, my husband and I wondered whether we should set up the birthing pool so at least it would be ready when they came.

This is the birthing pool I borrowed from Deborah midwife of Shiphrah Birthing Home. I had it cleaned a few days before I birthed. No, I did not give birth out in the garden hehehe

At about 5 am, Montri quietly set up the pool without any help since he didn’t want to wake up our staff. I kept active, moving from birthing ball where I would either swivel my hips around or bounce imagining baby going down into position, to the bed to be on all fours position and do pelvic tilts or to the bathroom to pee and just sit at the toilet because contractions would slow me down.

This is me very pregnant on my birthing ball. Santi took this photo weeks prior to labor.
At 7:22am I saw a bird chirping and pecking for food on the roof of our bathroom. (Now, this is unusual. We moved into our San Juan home a few weeks ago and this is the first time I see a bird ‘hang out’ at that very spot as if this creature knew what was to come. It hasn’t happened since then as well and I write this 2 weeks after the incident) I remember smiling despite the coming contractions because I felt good about the bird being there for a reason with me. I sent a message to my Kabbalah mentor in London and asked if it was a good omen- she confirmed, YES :)

Montri took a photo of that bird and I'm glad he did :)
At 8:09 I noticed my contractions slowed down going from 5 minute intervals a few hours ago to 10 minutes apart. I’m not sure if it was because I was less relaxed as day broke or I was also very tired from having no sleep since the previous night. By this time though, my birthing team were on their way already to us. Deborah, her assistant Lornie and my doula, Irina soon arrived.

Honesty, it felt quite awkward having them there just watch/stare at me while I felt pressured for my contractions to come and be consistent which was not happening. So, the midwives went to rest and sleep in the other room and just let me labor on my own. Irina, my doula, practiced all the skills she knew to naturally induce labor. We did spinning babies and Rebozo techniques, she applied her acupressure knowledge, pressed on certain pressure points with clary sage pure essential oil and massaged my aching back when I needed it. I’m so thankful that she’s bigger in size than I am because I can really feel that she can support me. If I had worked with a small sized doula, I could have easily toppled her over with all the pregnancy weight I gained!

Lunch came and passed, merienda came and passed. They encouraged me to eat so I managed to, even a little and nibbled on dates for snack knowing that I will be needing the energy for the hours or days to come.

In the late afternoon, I particularly remember being so distracted by the noise of the children playing outside and with all of the people being there. Also with the light coming into the room- all my senses seemed to be on hyperdrive. Because I was not progressing with all these factors, we all decided for my birthing team to go back home. They explained that I stalled labouring and this is quite normal. Deborah pointed out that I was still able to converse and joke in between contractions. Sometimes it could take days of on-and-off labor before ‘active labor’ kicks in, which is what we were really looking for.  So, as the sun was setting we said bye to my birthing team with the risk of not having them around if in case I birthed fast --- Deborah told Montri to catch the baby and bring baby to me to breastfeed. Sounded simple enough.

Something triggered when they left. My body reacted to the privacy, peace and quiet we suddenly had. Like a switch had turned on, I was back to regular contraction intervals. Oh, great! My parents visited and I didn’t feel like talking to them at all. When my mom entered the room to check on me, I didn’t even acknowledge her. I was busy labouring on all fours position on the bed. By this time, I needed all my energy to focus on the contractions. In the next couple of hours I noticed that they were getting stronger. By this time however, Montri and I didn’t want to bother the midwives and doula because I could go on another day and night labouring so we wanted to labor on our own as much as we can. It was also getting late at night so we wanted to follow Deborah’s advice of getting as much rest and sleep in between contractions. I tried my hardest to sleep on my left side but with each contraction I jumped to all fours as it was getting really uncomfortable staying still. I remember having to vocalize already, which is a form of release, moaning through each contraction.

My son Santi woke up at 9pm and said “Mommy is giving birth soon” as if he knew something was up. As much as I wanted to converse with him, I just couldn’t anymore. It’s all a blur now how Montri and I managed to labor with our 6 year old in the bedroom with us.

My husband had prepared a birthing playlist which unfortunately was not playing in our sound system at the time so he had to manually choose appropriate songs for me to get ‘in the mood’. This was working for awhile but when my contractions got intense I would frantically ask my husband to massage my lower back and when a song would end right at that time, his songlist would play alphabetically..of course songs that weren’t ‘birthing friendly’. Imagine me trying to labor to the tune of “Scream and Shoat” by Will I am. NOT FUN.

Monica: “Will you please change THAT song?!?!” (I know I wanted to curse at him but don’t think the words managed to come out)

Montri: “Uhh, sorry, sorry”

(This incident had to happen maybe two more times :/ )

Sometime in the night Montri decided to snack because he was hungry. Remember that all my senses are heightened so when I heard him happily MUNCH on Boy Bawang while reading newsfeeds on Facebook- I got so annoyed at him again. I said something like, “REALLY?! You’re doing that NOW??”

Then at one point he asked me “Is this active labor?” To which I replied angrily, “If THIS isn’t active labor, I don’t know what the F!@# this is!!!” ----that should’ve been his cue to call the midwives. I was so bitchy already!

I attempted to labor in the water because the birthing pool looked so inviting but when I got in, I could not relax- the water was not warm enough and it was too shallow so I ‘ordered’ my husband to heat up the water and add to it. Again, I remember the bitchy me came out. I transferred back to labor on the bed instead.

When my husband noticed that I was no longer calm during my contractions that were so strong and so close together already (at this point, all Hypnobirthing techniques flew out the window! I was exhausted and trembling already and it was getting more challenging just to use slow yogic breaths to keep my body soft) he kept reminding me to use my “Jedi Mind Tricks”. Then when he could no longer massage me with any kind of force to support my back labor, I had asked him to call already the doula, Irina, at least. I knew that he was getting sleepy as well and I didn’t want to labor alone with this intensity.

When she arrived and saw me shaking during contractions and delirious on the bed, I heard her “Oh yeah, SHE IS IN DEEP TRANSITION! Montri, you better call Deborah NOW!”  Montri did manage to call Deborah to come.

Irina massaged my lower back and within minutes I noticed that something in my body was changing. I was wondering why I couldn’t will my body to soften and relax anymore. I looked down to my belly and saw that the coming contractions were making my uterus so very hard, like a cannon ball about to erupt! Then it finally registered, “My body wants to push this baby out!”, I screamed.

Quickly, Irina and Montri helped me get out of the bed and into the birthing pool. Irina mentioned that the pushing stage could take hours. I rolled my eyes and complained thinking that I cannot stand doing this any longer.

Again, I positioned myself on all fours hands over the edges of the pool- this seemed like the only position I could get myself into. Suddenly, I felt a jolt of energy. My sleepiness and exhaustion went away as if someone injected me with mega doses of upper drugs. My eyes dilated and I had difficulty breathing. I was no longer acting human. I truly felt like an animal. Montri panicked saying that I was cross eyed and wasn’t breathing as I was hyperventilating already. He kept urging me, “Breathe!!! Breathe!!”

I swear if I wasn’t so into the zone I could’ve smacked him because I was trying my hardest to breathe but my body was taking over at this point… then all the holes of my body in spasms, opening in short surges- my eyes popping out, my mouth wanting to vomit, my anal sphincter wanting to poo (*This is the only time I’m grateful for being constipated as one of my fears was that I would poo in the pool during birth!!!), and my vagina  wanting to expel my baby all at the same time. I reached down and felt my baby’s head crowning! My whole body attempted to expel violently 3 to 4 times (during which I was worried because it was happening so very fast without the midwives there! Oh, I felt like I was going to explode. I had tried to breathe my body calm or at least to slow down the process but to no avail)

Within minutes of getting into the birthing pool, my body’s natural reflexes expelled the baby’s head and then the rest of the body soon followed. I heard my husband shout in an unusually high pitched voice, “Oh my God! She’s out! She’s so big!” flailing his arms upwards with tears in his eyes.

Knowing that the baby was still attached to the placenta within me, I had to turn the other direction with one leg up (huge yogic move right here) and as soon as Irina brought baby upwards to me from the water, I removed the double cord coil we saw on the neck without fuss, like me on auto-pilot. I was still obviously high on hormones. Then I just stared at this awake and alert new little creature looking back at me with huge almond eyes, bubbles coming out of the mouth. I positioned for baby to start suckling on my breast but it quickly found a hand to suck on. Then, baby finally latched after a few tries. It only occurred to me then to double check on the gender. Up to that point, we weren’t sure. So I raised one leg and said out loud, “We have a baby girl!”

I birthed my baby girl on March 14 at around 2:50am just a day earlier than the full moon of the Piscean month. We named our water baby, Sarah Maya.

This is a healing birth because NOW I know why I had to go through a c-section with Santi 7 years ago. It is so I can do a vbac and support other mothers who want to take the road less traveled. Everything always falls into place. You have to trust in your journey, always.
